A view of the backyard showing the mimosa stump. Just thought
I'd include this photo on this page so you're really be able
to remember where we came from. Makes our progress look much
more impressive! |

Another view looking out toward the dog run. In the foreground
is the original glass-brick patio, and the boxed-in ground cover
that's run amuck. |
| I decided that my birthday
present to Dawn would be digging this large pond. While she
was in New York for MacWorld, I got a lot of the digging done
by myself. This is exhausting work, I don't know how people
do this for a living. It just about killed me! I wanted to have
it ready for her birthday party, but instead the party showcased
a large hole in the yard. Oh well. |

Status of pond digging as of 07/17/2001. The berm has been piled
up, sod removed and relocated to some bare patches in the front
of the house. Due to the shadows, you unfortunately can't see
how much I've dug up, so I'll have to take another shot tomorrow.
|

Another view of the digging in progress, before I flew to New
York to join Dawn (July 19, 2001). |

We've progressed a bit further -- at this point, we're in August.
My, weren't we smart to choose the hottest month of the year
here in Texas to dig a pond that's been planned for over a year?
|

Digging, digging, digging. |

Call the paramedics! Taking a breather. In the rear you can
see the beginnings of our "waterfall" pile-up. Also,
around the perimeter of the pond I'm building up a border; in
this way we can make the pond deeper without digging further
into the dirt. |

We've dug down as far as we're going to go. We brought in 650
pounds of sand to provide some cushioning for the liner at the
bottom of the pond. We were so exhausted that all we did was
drop the bags into the hole for that evening... |
